U.S. “Sailor Moon,” Season 1 Episode 3 Opening Monologue: The evil masters of the Negaverse steal into our dreams, making us believe that only the very thin can be beautiful—an extremely dangerous notion.

I feel Sailor Moon always did a great job of countering Serena’s socially normative obsession with conventional beauty/being thin with messages like this. It’s totally representative of the real world to have a teenage female protagonist feel insecure and want to match social beauty norms, but the show’s narrative constantly portrays this as a mentally unhealthy part of Serena’s character (she herself usually preaches body positivity for others, but like so many of us finds it hard to apply this to herself), and reminds the audience to be body positive. Ultimately, the series is incredibly affirming of women of all appearances.

Appreciating Sailor Moon for being so feminist and body positive today

There’s still a lot of gender double standard perpetuated in the show, but they’re largely insignificant to the major moral or lesson of each episode.

Here is the thing I can’t stop thinking about with what’s happened here in Minnesota over the course of the past week: the display of support in the Twin Cities was staggering. The level of f*cks not given to those who might be offended by this acknowledgement of equal rights under the law was amazing.

But mostly, mostly. I think about a queer kid, riding in the back of her parents’ car seeing the city lit up like this. Maybe she hasn’t come out yet, maybe she’s been bullied, at home, at school, for being who she is. I can only imagine what seeing this would mean. And then I get teary and proud all over again.

Way to go, Minnesota. Who’s next?

In a piece for the New York Times, Angelina Jolie revealed she underwent a preventative double mastectomy. I’m not going to summarize it here because you should hear it coming from her. If you haven’t yet read it, you really should read it right now here.

Honestly I have my doubts about her reasoning, But still her body is not an object and her worth is not determined by her breasts. Is everything she’s ever done all of the sudden invalidated and ignored because she underwent a surgery? Oh you feel sorry for Brad Pitt? Because it was his body? His cancer? Because their relationship was entirely dependent upon her breasts. They were the only redeeming factor that she possessed that could possibly afford for her to have a meaningful relationship that has lasted so many years. Regardless of her reason, think about what you’re saying and what you actually mean by it.

Eliz. Warren wants to cut student interest rates to near zero

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) has introduced her first piece of legislation. It’s called the Bank on Students Loan Fairness Act, and would reduce the rate students pay on federally-subsidized student loans for one year, from 3.4% to 0.75%.

Without congressional action, on July 1 the rate is set to double from 3.4% to 6.8%.

Warren brings up an interesting point – her bill simply asks students to pay the same rates that big banks pay for borrowing.

She’s literally just asking if college grads can get the same deal as bank CEOs. The exact same interest rate. Not even a bailout or anything fancy (pipe dreams!) - just the same interest rate.

A seven-acre plot of land in the city’s Beacon Hill neighborhood will be planted with hundreds of different kinds of edibles: walnut and chestnut trees; blueberry and raspberry bushes; fruit trees, including apples and pears; exotics like pineapple, yuzu citrus, guava, persimmons, honeyberries, and lingonberries; herbs; and more. All will be available for public plucking to anyone who wanders into the city’s first food forest.

“This is totally innovative, and has never been done before in a public park,” Margarett Harrison, lead landscape architect for the Beacon Food Forest project, tells TakePart. Harrison is working on construction and permit drawings now and expects to break ground this summer.

The concept of a food forest certainly pushes the envelope on urban agriculture and is grounded in the concept of permaculture, which means it will be perennial and self-sustaining, like a forest is in the wild. Not only is this forest Seattle’s first large-scale permaculture project, but it’s also believed to be the first of its kind in the nation.

This sounds awesome in theory but I’d imagine people will get greedy and want to take way more than they should. I hope it works though. I wish we had things like this in every park.

I remember we had a pecan tree in my backyard when I lived in New Mexico. We could just pick pecans up off the ground and eat them for a snack. They were so good. I remember helping my dad collect them so we could sell them. We would make quite a bit of money from just that one tree and still have enough left over to keep some for ourselves. It drives me nuts when I look for pecans at the grocery store now and see them for $8 a pound when I used to just go outside and pick them up. I’d imagine everyone could benefit from having their own food producing plants and stuff. But I think a public forest of fruit baring trees would either be picked dry by people who are too cheap to buy or become unintentional havens for homeless people looking for a free meal.
